Dartmoor 365 by bus

Dartmoor 365 is a book by John Hayward that explores what, in his time, was the 365 square miles of Dartmoor.  He gives interesting information about each of the squares and in the past I have treated it as a treasure hunt looking to photograph the items he mentions.  At the front of the book are two maps of Dartmoor overlaid with a grid.  I have coloured in 210 of these 365 squares on one map and my blog Dartmoor 365 gives the details of each walk and photos.  However, age is catching up on me and I do not think I will be able to reach any further squares. I still love to take short walks on Dartmoor, and I have found the buses from Plymouth take me to many of the places mentioned in the book.  I have therefore decided to start colouring in the second map when I explore the squares using public transport. Previously in the blog I have detailed walks using the No 1 bus from Plymouth.  The walk from Horrabridge to Tavistock passes through two squares P...

River Fowey from Bodmin parkway

The No 11 bus is an hourly service from Plymouth to Bodmin Parkway railway station.  The bus journey takes one and a quarter hours as it winds through Cornish countryside.  If this seems too long for you, you could catch the train that only takes 40 minutes. From the station walk through the red gate and down a slight incline and under a railway bridge then follow the path along parallel to the River Fowey.  This is a very good path and it is quiet and peaceful with lots of bird song and wild flowers along the way.  When you come to Respryn Bridge walk through the car park and then across the bridge to the path along the river on the other side.  There are two paths, one an accessible one and the other close to the river bank that is rough in places.  If you are doing this walk in March you will see the wild daffodils along both paths.  In late April or May there are lots of bluebells in the area. After about half an hour of walking you come to a...

Horrabridge to Tavistock

This is another walk that uses the No 1 bus from Plymouth to Tavistock.  It is a linear walk which is one of the advantages of using public transport, you don't have to go back to the start to collect your car.  Catch the No 1 bus to the stop just before Horrabridge.  There is a gate by the parking space at the edge of the bus stop that leads you to the road from Crapstone.  Walk along this road until you come to where the Drakes Trail crosses the road into the old station.  You could start this walk at Yelverton and walk along the Drakes Trail until you reach this part, but that would add another half an hour to your walk and there is more of interest to see in this part, with a cafe at the end!  Today there were sheep and lambs on the road and just further on a llama in a field. After going through a gate at the side of a cattle grid you walk through a close of houses whose names reflect the fact that there were sidings and a station of the great western ...

Tavistock Canal

Image
The No 1, Stagecoach, bus goes every 15 minutes from the centre of Plymouth to Tavistock.  There are a number of walks from this bus route.  The service usually has double decker buses and there are views across to Dartmoor along the journey, so it is a very pleasant 50 minute ride.   For this walk get off at the stop before the Tavistock Bus Station, just before the roundabout with Sir Francis Drake's statue.  You are then immediately at the opening to the path beside the Tavistock Canal, walking away from Tavistock town centre.   This is a very peaceful walk with the water with the water flowing gently along and lots of birds  to be seen Cows sometimes come down to drink from the water and the field is fenced off at these points to stop them escaping along the water.  In May there are bluebells in the woods at the side of the canal and you frequently see ducks, and in spring ducklings. The water is clear so there are good reflections ...
