Dartmoor 365 by bus
Dartmoor 365 is a book by John Hayward that explores what, in his time, was the 365 square miles of Dartmoor. He gives interesting information about each of the squares and in the past I have treated it as a treasure hunt looking to photograph the items he mentions. At the front of the book are two maps of Dartmoor overlaid with a grid. I have coloured in 210 of these 365 squares on one map and my blog Dartmoor 365 gives the details of each walk and photos. However, age is catching up on me and I do not think I will be able to reach any further squares. I still love to take short walks on Dartmoor, and I have found the buses from Plymouth take me to many of the places mentioned in the book. I have therefore decided to start colouring in the second map when I explore the squares using public transport.
Previously in the blog I have detailed walks using the No 1 bus from Plymouth. The walk from Horrabridge to Tavistock passes through two squares P2 and O2 and this part of the walk is going to be the next entry in this blog.
The No 1 bus is very useful for accessing Dartmoor. I plan to use it to stroll around Robough Down (R4) Harrowbeer Down (Q3), Clearbrook (S4), Meavy (R5) and Horrabridge (P3). If I travel all the way to Tavistock I can then catch the 118 that goes to Okehampton opening up many more squares.
Catching a bus the Gold bus to Ivybridge will enable me to visit Stowford Bridge (X11) and Western Beacon (X12). Further on it will take me to South Brent (V15).
There are other bus routes and walks I can plan using the timetables on the Devon Interactive bus map . I look forward to seeing how many squares I can colour in on my new map.
